China Overtakes US As World Leader in Scientific Research Papers

According to a new report from the Japan’s science and technology ministry and the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy, China has taken over the US as the world’s leading country in the publication of scientific research papers and « high impact » studies. China now publishes more scientific research papers than the United States and Germany combined. The data is based on averages for yearly publications between 2018 and 2020. Clarivate collected the data.

China has surpassed the US as the world’s leader in the field of scientific research.

China’s scientific research output has surpassed that of the United States in a variety of metrics such as patents and the number of papers published. According to the custom writing org review US’s National Science Foundation in 2016, China published 426,000 scientific papers compared to forty thousand in the US. This has led to a significant competition for US scientists in many fields.

Despite the dominance of the US in scientific output, China has surpassed the US in regards to quality. China was fourth while the US was third in this class. However, neither is leading in total citations of its publications. In fact, Switzerland and Sweden produced the most cited publications, followed by the US as well as the EU and China. These results indicate that each country has its own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to research in science.

China’s scientists have benefitted from massive investments and policies of the government. However their research output is also subject to selective surveillance and politicalization. To limit the free flow of information and prevent the dissemination of research results, the government has restricted internet usage. The Chinese government treated the SARS epidemic of 2002-2003 and the covid-19 pandemic as « state secrets ». A Chinese scientist was forced by these policies to sign a false statement about his research.

It’s also the leader in the world in « high impact » research studies.

China and the United States have overtaken the United States in key metrics, including scientific research papers. The National Institute of Science and Technology Policy, (NISTP) estimates that China publishes nearly two-thirds of all the world’s scientific papers every year. The US however, on the other hand, publishes only 293,434 journals articles annually.

The US has a long history of publishing high-quality research papers. In 2016, the US had the highest number of « high impact » papers. A high-impact research paper consists of a large number of citations. A research paper’s « citation impact » is determined by the number of references it has.
